In the nineteenth century, British philosopher Jeremy Bentham created a design he believed would allow a single guard to oversee an entire prison. He called it the panopticon. Bentham’s design—which was never built in his lifetime—called for a round prison building with an imposing guard tower at its center. The tower would make it possible to see into each of the surrounding prison cells.
Jennie, Tom Cannon is my brother-in-law and he and Scottie connected me to your emails. My husband had dementia for almost 15 years… it was an early onset type, and he did well for a number of years until he didn’t. We ended up moving to North Carolina to be near my family and Tom and Scottie and others couldn’t have been more helpful to me over the years. Your installment today brings back many memories… David finally ended up in an amazingly perfectly designed state run unit for almost 2 years until he was docile enough to be in a nursing home for the last 6 months. Caring for someone with dementia is a journey like no other. Thank you so much for sharing your journey and know that several of us here in western North Carolina are thinking of you and your family and appreciating your sharing. With love, Lucy Bennett
Lucy--thanks for the kind thoughts, and I’m sorry to hear that you and David had to deal with dementia, especially for such a long time. Thanks for the connection, and for the support.
